The L.E.A.D. program begins with 5th grade students. It is a 10-week program in collaboration with law enforcement, school, parents, community and governmental agencies, provide leadership, guidance, direction and program materials to L.E.A.D. officers, parents and educators needed to deliver a comprehensive drug and violence prevention curriculum.

It teaches children to recognize and resist the direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and other drugs. Since a large percentage of crime is drug related, it is vital that we reach the children before it is too late. The L.E.A.D. program does not just tell kids to say “NO”, it teaches them how to say “NO” by:

  1. Providing the children with accurate information about the dangers of Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco.
  2. Teaching children ways to resist drugs and violence while providing positive alternative to drug use.
  3. Teaching children the decision-making skills and the consequences of their behavior.
  4. Building the students self esteem while teaching them how to resist the different types of peer pressure and to make responsible choices.

A L.E.A.D. dance is held once per year for all fifth grade students in the Borough. Upon completion a graduation ceremony is held, which is attended by the parents, Town Officials and members of the Roselle Park Police Department, including the Chief of Police.
